Emergency Medicine Education without Classrooms

(Ffion Davies MRCP, FRCPCH, FRCEMInternational Federation of Emergency Medicine)

簡介

Emergency Departments are fast-paced, pressurized environments where creating space and time for formal teaching can be a challenge. Staff must learn, for care to improve. Staff want to learn, but time is short.

Innovative solutions focused on short, frequent teaching opportunities are most likely to be successful in helping staff in this career.

Shift-based work patterns make classroom learning inconvenient. Modern educational theory tells us that classroom learning brings small reward for large investment. Instead, we must teach alongside our patients, using every possible opportunity for a “teaching moment”.

Modern technology and the social distancing required during a pandemic, have brought new ideas which are very well suited to emergency care education.

Adult learners are motivated to learn facts, if suitably guided to appropriate material. The internet allows easy access to information, which can be studied before the planned learning event. The expert educator (usually senior doctor) can then maximise the benefit of the precious learner-teacher-patient interaction, keeping time short and therefore efficient. This is the “flipped classroom” model of learning.

FOAMEd (Free Online Access to Medical Education) allows the teacher to give further learning as a “take-home” challenge. I will explain how reflection and “spaced repetition” allow further benefit from the original short learning encounter.

Using these tools, senior staff can educate many less experienced staff, without taking too much time away from delivering patient care. Emergency Care education for the future, requires breaking away from tradition.
